A rescue operation is underway for hundreds of mine workers trapped by fire at Harmony’s Kusasalethu mine near Carletonville, Johannesburg.
The fire, which started during maintenance work at the mine’s 75 level at around 09:40 in the morning, has been contained, the company said on Sunday.
“At present, some 287 of the 486 workers are confirmed to be safe in refuge bays underground, which are supplied with fresh air, water and telephone communication to surface. Mine rescue teams are working to assist those in refuge bays and to locate the other workers,” the company said in a statement.
Harmony Gold said all operations have been suspended.
