If has taken the commodities doom for the alternative mining indaba to hog the limelight. In boom times, it might have been dismissed as a sideshow of lunatics, an unnecessary distraction, which nobody cared about, except the organisers.
Now a stone’s throw from the plush Cape Town International Centre (CTCC), in a nondescript place is the Alternative Mining Indaba. Considerably, the commodities price bust has fortuitously aided and abated its profile.
The theme of the Alternative Mining Indaba, which the African Justice Network has organised, is “Making natural resources work for the people – leaving no one behind”. Its objective is highlighting the flipside side of stories of success extensively covered in the media – of lives and environments destroyed by companies pushing to extract more tons of precious minerals to feed shareholder demands.
