In a media briefing which African Mining Brief was represented, Transport Minister, Dipuo Peters, said that, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has received R172bn (about $11bn) for a ten-year period.
This development would go a long way in improving efficiency. Lack of maintenance of coaches and signalling systems, ineffective capital funding as well as poor communication are said to be the main causes of train accidents.
Peters also revealed that Prasa was in the process of acquiring 3,600 new coaches for commercial operation in October this year. In addition, 135 stations will be modernised to enhance commuters’ experience of making use of public transport.”
