Illegal miners invade AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi mine

AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine, which has been inactive ever since massive employee layoffs in 2014, has become a magnet for illegal miners. The company revealed this during a press conference held in Accra, Ghana.

Eric Asubonteng, general Manager of AngloGold Ashanti Ghana, said the company had noticed that, for more than two months, illegal miners have been looting large quantities of high-grade gold bearing material for more than two months.

“In the process of looting illegal miners are causing significant damage to critical infrastructure,” he lamented.
