There is room for discussion – South African mineral resources minister to concerned miners

South African’s mineral resources minister’s announcement about the proposed changes to the Mining Charter triggered unease in boardrooms of mining companies in South Africa. Now, noticing the effects the move has had on investor confidence, Mosebenzi Zwane, has said the proposed changes are not final, and there is still room for review.

Mosebenzi told a business meeting : “If there are issues that need us to go beyond that time we will do so. This statement has calmed nerves thus far.

Some players in the mining industry expressed disgust at the amended Mining Charter after the announcement was made last Friday, 15th April 2016.

The proposed amended Mining Charter states that producers “must achieve a minimum target of 26% ownership per mining right to enable meaningful economic participation of black people”.
