Tanzania to become Africa’s biggest fertiliser producer

Tanzania is aiming at moving from a net importer of fertiliser to Africa biggest producer through a $3 billion construction of a fertiliser-producing plant.

According to a report filed by Reuters, to implement the project, the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), which manages the country’s oil sector, has signed a joint-venture agreement with German firm, Ferrostaal Industrial Projects, British industrial catalysts producer, Haldor Topsoe, and Pakistani fertilizer producer, Fauji.

According to a statement from the country’s presidency, the factory, which will be Africa’s biggest in terms of fertilizer production, will produce 3,800 tons of fertilizer each day and employ up to 5,000 people.

The fertiliser plant will be built in the Southern Tanzania and part of the output will be directed to the local market, and the surplus will be exported.
