In a bid to stem the loss of potential tax revenue to the government, President Magafuli has announced that the prohibition of the transportation of mineral sands from gold mines for smelting outside Tanzania.
“It is very surprising that these investors (mining companies) have been air-lifting mineral sands to other countries,” Magufuli lamented in his address during a public rally at Kahama, a district in what is termed the Great Lakes region.
Magufuli said that although the value of mineral recovered could not be determined, the government was losing substantial revenue. Alternatively, Magufuli called on gold miners to build smelters in Tanzania to process the mineral sands.
He observed that Tanzania was the only country which was blessed with minerals that had been allowing the export of mineral sands.
