JSE-listed Exxaro has confirmed through a press release that the National Union of Mineworkers has obtained a strike certificate and has given notice of their intention to strike at Grootegeluk.

“We’ve noted the decision by NUM to issue a strike notice. The strike action affects Grootegeluk coal mine in Lephalale, as well as Leeuwpan coal mine in Delmas,” states Exxaro executive head: stakeholder affairs, Mzila Mthenjane.

“We continue discussions with NUM in order to resolve and reach agreement sooner to minimise impact on employees.”

Negotiations with Solidarity, the other trade union recognised for collective bargaining, are continuing as they have not declared a dispute with the company.

The company has received a revised set of demands from the NUM.

As a result, the NUM and Exxaro agreed to meet on today to continue with the negotiation process.

“We are working closely with all other stakeholders to minimise any potential impact on coal supply,” states Mthenjane.

“We remain committed to resolving the dispute with the NUM and we are continuing with engagements and remain confident that an amicable resolution can be reached,” concludes Mthenjane.
