Botswana’s biggest diamond mine expansion project to produce first ore in 2017

Debswana is confident of producing first diamonds from its Cut 8 project in Jwaneng in 2017, the organisation’s Corporate Affairs Manager, Matshiditso Kamona, said in a statement.

Debswana, the world’s biggest producer of diamond by sales value, is carrying out the $3 billion expansion project, known as Cut 8, to extend the life of Jwangeng Mine by a further seven years, which increase the mine’s capacity to produce 100 million carats.

Debswana preferred expanding the existing pit to going deep underground.

Kamona said: “The Jwaneng pit expansion is on track and will start delivering first ore plant in 2017.”

Debswana is aiming to keep production flat at 20-million carats in 2016.
