45, 000 Miners in South Africa could be jobless – NUM

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in South Africa fears that about 45, 000 of its members might be retrenched, due to a struggling mining sector, according to NUM President, Piet Matosa, as quoted by Reuters.

Mining companies in South Africa are under pressure due to low commodity prices and increasing costs which have compelled them to undertake cost cutting measures like retrenchments, shelving projects and cutting down employees.
