While environmentalists are calling for Africa to adopt cleaner, renewable sources as an alternative for coal, African Union Chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma believes coal will still constitute a significant part of Africa’s energy mix in the foreseeable future.

In a press conference which was held during last week’s Junior Indaba, Dlamini-Zuma said she believed coal’s abundance, cost advantage and ability to generate electricity made it a viable source of energy in Africa.

Dlamini-Zuma said that it was farfetched to expect Africa to entirely jettison coal, but as believed that, with time, as technology for solar power and wind energy became cheaper, it would have to be increased.
