Death at Glencore Zambia mine raises safety concerns

The death of four miners at Glencore’s Zambian Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) have brought the pressing issue of safety in Zambia’s mining sector, which has been overshadowed by concerns about weak commodity prices in the past twelve months.

Three of the miners were electrocuted at the company’s Mufulira underground mine in separate incidents, an official was quoted by Reuters on condition of anonymity.

In the interim, according to the official the company has halted production related activities to facilitate investigations into the severe accidents that have been experienced in the recent past.

Just like in other African countries, the issue of safety in Zambia’s mining sector remains a blight spot in the recent revival of Zambia’s mining sector.
