UTILIZING ENCAPSULATING FOAM
The Dust Encapsulating Foaming Agent (DEFA) process delivers a relatively low-pressure stream of dry-content foam to cover and remove dust from even hard to reach areas and equipment. The dust-encapsulating foam gravitates and / or is motivated to a lower level where the foam readily dissipates and then the residual dust is easily removed by conventional means.
The exceptionally environmentally friendly Dust-Encapsulating Foaming Agent (DEFA) is a pH ~neutral product from Thompson Industrial Services, LLC – based in Sumter, SC USA – which can safely and efficiently remove non-reactive combustible, explosive and fugitive dust throughout the mine. The foaming equipment is quite compact, mobile and can be used within 100’ of either side of the unit and can cover areas within 30’ of the “wand”, which is used for dispersing the foam. Only standard utilities are required to facilitate operation of the unit.
The Dust Encapsulating Foaming Agent (DEFA) foam attracts and encapsulates dust “like a magnet”, gradually taking dust deposits down surfaces to the floor. The non-slippery foam dissipates within a few hours and the resulting dust is readily swept or vacuumed away.
DEFA is also ideal for cleaning any kind of coal dust, especially Powder River Basin coal, from western USA regions, which can be very explosive. Routine cleaning around volatile coal dust areas is an important safety precaution and provides peace of mind to your company and employees. In the states, DEFA is routinely used to safely and cost-effectively mitigate dust to comply with NFPA, MSHA and OSHA regulations and guidance directives.
The Dust Encapsulating Foaming Agent (DEFA) process can also be used effectively in buildings and structures of industrial facilities to effectively reach high, remote areas like beams, girders, process equipment and most electrical components as well since the foam, although it does contain minimal moisture, essentially has a “dry” consistency. Normally from up to 1 inch depth can be removed by the DEFA process without de-bulking with vacuum first.
The DEFA process surpasses other methods, as an even safer and more efficient process than hand vacuuming. Dust, of course, can be quite volatile under certain conditions therefore routine cleaning is a crucial safety precaution.
